St. Louis city was founded in 1764 by French traders who named it in honor of Louis IX of France. Later, the United States acquired St. Louis as a part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1804. Today, St. Louis is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri and home to the 630 ft landmark, the Gateway Arch. While the city area has a population of 301,578, its metropolitan area which extends into Illinois, has an estimated population of over 2.8 million.

The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission works to attract citywide conventions, one-hotel meetings, sporting events, group tours and individual leisure travelers to St. Louis. It was founded in 1909 by local business leaders, after the success of the World’s Fair in 1904.

The St. Louis Art Museum was founded in 1879 and collects and conserves art across time and cultures. It strives to educate visitors while preserving a sense of artistic achievement for the St. Louis community.

The City Museum is housed in an old shoe factory in Downtown St. Louis, located in downtown St. Louis and is known as a whimsical artist-built playground. The museum is made up of various indoor, outdoor, underground playground and tunnel elements that welcome exploration from visitors of all ages.
